2500bc-14/1300bc | A platform barrow with ditch and mound of broken flints, loose chalk and mould. The mound also contained a surprising number of small brown water-worn pebbles of irregular size from a gravel bed or beach. There was a considerable quantity of broken pottery especially over the centre of the barrow. There appeared to be an area on the floor of the barrow where a fire had been lit; above this area were unburnt animal teeth and bones. At the barrow centre was a small circular pit c0.45m deep in the chalk and 0.3m wide. It contained much vegetable charcoal and a single fragment of burnt bone. The charcoal was of beech and a chestnut like tree. The pit sides appeared to have been subject to burning. |
