2500bc-14/1300bc | Shortly to the north of Site 1166 was a possible twin barrow whose southern half contained no burial deposit, but was of unusual internal structure. Its mound covered a hollow dug out of the natural chalk, of oval form c2.1m x 1.9m, filled by red clay which had been piled to a height of 0.6m over it. The edge was marked in the clay by a border of very large flints. The hollow contained a chamber cut in the chalk c1.5m deep from the natural surface, at the bottom of which was a cist c0.6m x 0.5m x 0.4m on the east side of the hollow. Three crude steps were cut on the south side of the chamber leading down to the cist. Red clay filled the chamber to the top of the cist. The cist was filled with lumps of chalk but nothing else. The red clay had been brought from 1.5 miles away, the nearest place it could be obtained, a considerable labour given the quantity. As only the southern half was excavated, it is possible that a burial deposit was in the other half. |
