2500bc-14/1300bc | A small round barrow of turf with a soil casing, a marginal stone ring, and a possible ditch. A central cremation of an adult and child, bones clean of charcoal, was enveloped in a reddish-brown granular substance (possibly a leather bag which had collapsed leaving a hole above the deposit). It had been deposited cold, at the centre of a 1.4m wide spread of dark greasy soil and charcoal (pyre material). A second cremation of a child c11 was represented by a small quantity of burnt bones, clean, loosely distributed and deposited when hot, as reddened soil and charcoal shows extending on the west side into turf layers surrounding cremation 1. Layers of greyish sandy clay covered both deposits, and the turf mound started for cremation 1 was built on to cover cremation 2 as one process. A stake circle centred on the north west point of cremation 1, of a regular 3.9m radius. There were some other stake holes inside this circle, smaller in size and of uncertain function. A stone ring was accurately set out centring on the same point as the stake circle, 8.6m in diameter. There was some incomplete evidence for a quarry ditch. |
