2500bc-14/1300bc A flat grave just east of Avebury bowl barrow 19. A flat sarsen slab 1.05m x 1m x 0.3m thick covered a circular grave cut into the natural chalk. The top of the grave filling was loose chalk rubble, soft earth and grey ash with charcoal flakes. Beneath was chalk rubble with some young ox bones, broken and interspersed in the filling. Ox jaws were found just above the skull of a child c5. The skeleton lay on its back, head to N, knees drawn up as if tightly bound to the body on deposition, the head facing E. The forearms were crossed above the breast, elbows to sides. By the left shoulder was a Bi Beaker, on its side, mouth to east. Its neck and rim had been supported as if to retain some contents. There were two old chips on its upper side. Also associated with the child was a large flat piece of chalk 10cm x 9cm with grooves as if carved finger outlines. 2 small flint flakes were set one below each pelvis bone, right and left. A fine layer of earth with charcoal sprinkling covered the flat grave bottom, except beneath the carved stone.
