2500bc-14/1300bc | A bowl barrow covering a post circle which contained three pits. Two in the south west quadrant had been disturbed, the third in the north east sector was almost circular and dug 0.6m into bedrock chalk. It contained an adult cremation including a cranial disc trepanned from the parietal bone of the skull. The low mound covering pits and post holes was of chalky soil. Four probable Romano-British burials of crouched inhumations with associated Romano-British sherds were later inserted into the mound. Some Beaker and Woodhenge grooved ware sherds were associated with the early phase of the site, found in disturbed contents. A shale bead identical to that found in the secondary cremation in Collingbourne Kingston 8 (Site 499) was lying on natural chalk inside the post hole circle. |
