3500bc - 2500bc | A trapezoidal cairn oriented NNW and sited unusually on a valley bottom. The 1869 excavations found the remains of 24 skeletons and pottery fragments in a gallery grave with 2 pairs of side chambers. Bones were described as 'much broken and in no regular arrangement', but were found each set 'in a small confused mass' as if the skeleton had collapsed from a sitting position. The central gallery held 10 bodies, chamber A 3-4, chamber B 2, chamber C 2 and chamber D 4. Of the total 3 were children c8-10, 2 old people and the rest male and female adults c25-45. There were 2 potsherds of Neolithic A (Abingdon or Windmill Hill) ware and no evidence of later use. |
