2500bc-14/1300bc A bell barrow comprising a turf core and a chalk capping over the remains of a funeral pyre and an off-centre single cremated interment of a male c27 on the old land surface. A few sherds were found in the mound (2 of Beaker, one of these from below the funeral pyre), little flint and a little animal bone. The pyre was 3m east of the centre of the barrow, originally 3.6m in diameter but after searching for bone was complete had been tidied up into an area 1m x 0.9m. Some bone fragments from the pyre material fitted the cremation deposit bone fragments. The grave was dug at the pyre edge to the south east, as a sub-rectangle c1.5m x 0.9m x 0.45m deep. The bones were set in a pile, ash free, to the north end of the grave, and on top were placed a bronze dagger, and near the bottom a whetstone. To one side were bone tweezers and a bone pin. The grave was filled with turf, and clean chalk was heaped over the grave. The dagger had a leather sheath, the underside being preserved until discovery. It did not appear to have been used, but to have been kept in its sheath.
