2500bc-14/1300bc | A bowl barrow used later as an Anglo-Saxon cemetery. The primary interment was at the barrow centre (No 23) and comprised a thorough cremation and a great amount of wood ash filling a small pit, overflowing 0.6-9m beyond the pit edge. A burnt bead was the only artefact accompanying the deposit. The ash appeared to be from the pyre fired on the spot. A flint cairn 0.9m high covered the deposit. Above this cairn was a secondary cremation deposit (No 22) of clean bone brought from elsewhere accompanied by a bronze dagger 15cm above. |
