2500bc-14/1300bc | Two barrows 4 and 4A contained within a single ditch, forming a regular arc at the north east, but straightening on both sides to join a smaller regular arc at the south west, making a pear shape. Barrow 4 had a mound and berm, was 6m distant from 4A and of similar construction, perhaps with more evidence for turves in the mound make-up. Just west of the centre the primary burial appeared as a little conical heap of powdered charcoal c0.5m across and 0.22m high containing a few calcined bone fragments. In the middle of the heap was a small bronze knife-dagger which had lost its point before being deposited. It had a rounded butt, two rivets, and resembled that at Barrow Hills Field 16 (Site 978). The remains were those of a child c6-12, many bone fragments having been broken after cremation. The space between the two barrows had been originally filled, and the whole construction must have appeared as of hour glass shape. |
