Acknowledgements

The project has been supported and funded from the outset by Marks & Spencer plc. They have contributed generously to the costs of the project and facilitated changes to the design of the shopfloor and substructure to allow long-term access to the monitoring devices. Marks & Spencer also made the services of their specialist advisers available during the planning of this project. In this respect acknowledgement must be made to the help and assistance of Nathanial Litchfield (planning consultants), NJSR Architects, Gleeds (Quantity Surveyors) and Hutter Jennings and Titchmarsh (Engineers). During the construction works, great help and assistance was given by the site management and staff of Bovis Management. The authors are indebted to the management and staff of Marks & Spencer both from the store in Parliament Street and the Development Team at Baker Street, London, for their help and assistance. In particular the support of Graham Dibb and John Beer has been invaluable.

The project has benefitted from the outset from the help and advice from numerous individual archaeologists and archaeological organisations. In particular the City of York Council would like to thank Mike Corfield, Head of the Ancient Monuments Laboratory, English Heritage, and Sebastian Payne, Ancient Monuments Laboratory, English Heritage; Professor Martin Carver, University of York; Dr Richard Hall, David Brinklow, Martin Stockwell, Graham Bruce and Ashley Mainland, York Archaeological Trust; Dr H Kenward and Dr A Hall, Environmental Archaeology Unit, University of York; Dr A Milles, formerly of the Environmental Archaeology Unit, University of York. The design and installation of the instrumentation and the collection of data was undertaken principally by Mat Davis, formerly of Hunting Land & Environment. The City of York Council is indebted to Mat for his skills, patience and good humour during all phases off this project. All comments and errors remain the responsibilty of the authors.
