Such are the possibilities of digital resources in learning and teaching, but how does this compare to the reality of how SCRAN is actually being used in further and higher education?
At the time of writing (April 2002), use of SCRAN is not yet embedded in its licensed institutions. While there are pockets of good and enthusiastic practice, SCRAN's contacts with this sector indicate that its potential is simply not yet being realised. For this reason, while it is certainly realistic, discussion in section 3 remains largely hypothetical. There are a number of reasons for this current level of use, including awareness, available staff time, and access to facilities.
