Applet Help - Comparative distribution map of pottery, sculpture, coins and manorial lands in Lincolnshire

Contents Information

This map allows the reader to explore the distributions of pottery, coins, manorial lands and Anglo-Scandinavian sculpture in Lincolnshire. The Control Panel enables each distribution to be toggled 'on' and 'off'. Median scales are used in this map in order to increase the visibility of the distributions on the screen. The sculpture distribution is not scaled as it is simply a presence/absence representation.

Pottery data was compiled from the East Midlands Anglo-Saxon Pottery Project database (Vince and Young 1991) with permission from Dr. Alan Vince and Jane Young. This database is continually being updated. Queries regarding the most current data should be directed to Dr. Alan Vince or Jane Young (Write to: 25 West Parade, Lincoln, LN1 1NW, UK). This data is structured to represent the maximum number of pots.

Sculpture data was compiled from Evison and Stocker (1999). It represents the territorial distributions of the Lindsey and Kesteven covers (marked Lindsey and Kesteven in the Control Panel) which are stylistically quite different from one another (Evison and Stocker 1999: 82-87).

Manorial data was compiled from the Lincolnshire Domesday (Foster and Longley 1924). It is divided into manorland, marsh, meadow and underwood, as per the descriptions in Domesday. The slices of the pie charts represent the carucates assessed to the geld. This is not a complete representation of manorial lands from Lincolnshire. Instead, it includes all the settlements from where pottery has been excavated and any other land associated with those settlements. A complete survey of the Lincolnshire Domesday was outside the scope of this project (Symonds 1999).

The distribution of coins was compiled from "Early Medieval Corpus of Coin Finds" Department of Coins and Metals, Fitzwilliam Museum; last consulted May 2002.
