Small sondage on the area of the front of the bank (to the left). Shows the remains of the dark turf revetment (to the right of the ranging pole), giving way to the clay packing behind the wall, here excavated out. This reveals several stones of the former wall. This is cut by the palisade trench of period 4. See also views from the opposite direction in photo 1/16, at a later stage of excavation in 1/18, and at an earlier stage of excavation in 1/13.
