Area of the front of the bank excavated from the side of a machine-cut trench. The clay of the bank and the remains of the front turf revetment can be seen top right, after the front turf revetment (to the right of the small ranging pole) is removed, to reveal the remains of the wall (period 2) and the edge of the clay of the bank. This also shows the soil buried under the bank, which the construction trench of the wall has here cut into. The wall, the clay packing and the destruction deposits of the wall are all cut by the palisade trench of period 4, seen in section, top left. (For an earlier stage of this excavation, see 1/22).
