Area of the front of the bank, at the side of a machine-cut trench. The clay of the bank and the remains of the front turf revetment are revealed (right), cut into (here in a vertical line) by the (former) wall (period 2). The remains of the wall are starting to emerge, covered with its destruction deposits. The wall and its destruction deposits are cut by the V-shaped palisade trench of period 4, which can just be discerned. (For later stages of this excavation, see photos 1/22 and 1/20).
