View of Area 2, at an early stage in the excavations. The top of the noticeable break of slope, top left, marks the line of the southern bank. A stack of turf within the body of the bank shows in front of the ranging rod. Part of the intra-mural walkway inside the corner of the bank is uncovered, to the left. The palisade trench of period 4 runs as a dark line along the front of the bank, and shows in section in the machine-cut trench in the foreground.
