3.35.16 Other birds

A variety of other birds occur in small numbers, but the poor condition or stylisation of many pieces means that their attribution to a particular species can be difficult. Thus while Bird 152 from Woodeaton has been published as an eagle (e.g. Green 1976, 178; Kirk 1949, 31 no. 3), Bagnall Smith (1995, 181) suggests that it might in fact be another bird such as a dove. Bird 1119 from the Thames in London is probably a goose, but may be a swan. Although primarily associated with Juno, the goose was also associated with a number of other deities including Priapus, Isis and Osiris (Toynbee 1973, 263).

Four owl figurines have been found in Britain (206, 834, 1009 and 1069). They are usually shown as a fairly squat bird, with their wings folded across the back.
