Description | A Roman eagle figurine with outspread wings with child riding on its back, holding on to its neck. Head of child missing. Crude incised line decoration representing eagles plumage. Some damage around edges. (Identified by Catherine Johns of the BM as a possible Jupiter eagle with Mercury riding its back. These are sometimes found perched on a thunderbolt surmounting the index and middle fingers of a Hand of Sabazius. If this is so then it is an unusual find for the British Isles.)(PAS) |
