6. Documentation currently available

So far, study of the old publications and unpublished documents still conserved in the archives of the Musée National d'Histoire et d'Art has revealed a total of 300 different Gallo-Roman sites, cemeteries, isolated tombs and funerary monuments in the territory of the present Grand Duchy alone. Of these 300 sites, it is possible to distinguish 172 cemeteries, 56 isolated tombs, 17 isolated tumuli, 12 groups of at least 2 tumuli, 22 sites yielding at least one funerary inscription, 25 sites yielding at least one funerary monument other than a tumulus, and 4 burial chambers.

At the present stage of research, analysis of the cemeteries alone gives the following results as regards the chronological distribution and continuity of occupation of the sites:

tombs from number of cemeteries% of datable cemeteries
1st century 74 69
2nd century 40 37
3rd century 25 23
4th century 17 16
