There are 331 fragments of glass, 7.5% of which are beads and c.15% are post-medieval or modern. Glass vessel fragments make up the bulk of the remainder, and although found in all parts of the site, have a denser distribution in the 'housin g' area and towards the southern part of the settlement. Glass vessels are an important indicator of trade and status in Early Anglo-Saxon England; the low overall frequency here indicates that there is little reason to suggest that the settlement as a wh ole had a particularly high status. The distribution of easily recognised fragments such as parts of claw beakers, which are clearly early in date, gives support to the suggestion that during the early period the settlement covered its maximum area with f ragments widely distributed across the site (see also 4.15.6 Glass).
