The searchable bibliography comprises 7 fields. Several of these provide the components of the CBA-
recommended format for a bibliographical entry. The remainder offer options for bibliography
structures, and are useful in research focused on an area, county, period or special topic.
Author(s): The author or authors of a publication, or occasionally the body publishing it (eg
RCHM).
Year of Publication: As far as can be ascertained. Some Journals vary (even within
a series) in their dating which may denote the year of a Society's Transactions or the year of publication.
Each Journal's practice is respected, but if there is ambiguity the year of publication is used where
known.
Title: The title of the published item. Very occasionally an untitled article has the subject
supplied [in square brackets]. Standard conventions are used for individually authored items within composite edited
publications.
Journal or Publisher's details: The Journal Proceedings, Transactions, Organisation, Public Body or
commercial Publisher under whose imprint the item goes. In the case of a Journal, Proceedings etc the
Volume Number, Part Number and page references are given. Sometimes only the location of printing
is known, and then this is given. The link under Journal goes to the query form so that a search on journals used to compile the Gazetteer can be made
Region: The broad geographical area or areas to which the published item relates. This may be
General (relates to the whole area under study), or SW, S or SE as defined above.
County: The county or counties to which the published item relates. A General category is
possible here too as for Region. Use County summaries i.e. Beds, Berks, Bucks, Cambs, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Glos, Gwent, Hants, IoW, Herts, Kent, Mddx, Oxon, Scilly, SE Wales, Som, Surrey, Sussex, Wilts
Date Range: The period(s) to which the published item relates (3500, 2500, 1400, 800 or 100).
Sometimes this is classed as General also.
