2500bc-14/1300bc | A large circular pit of 5m diameter and c60m SSW of Barrow 14 (Site 1048), in whose upper fill at the pit centre was a fragmentary inhumation F4583 comprising a skull and four limbs, some of the larger shaft bones appearing to have been cut in two, and belonging to a male c40-50. This deposit may have been bagged. An unaccompanied crouched inhumation F942 of a young person c13-15 lay against the NW edge of the pit. The pit fill contained domestic material: animal bones, waste flint flakes, a Late Neolithic transverse arrow head, a barbed and tanged arrow head, and fragments of Beaker pottery. A spread of charcoal lay against the fragmentary burial. Below these deposits was a further spread of charcoal, associated with a fairly dense scatter of bones, including animal bones, and further human bone fragments - part of a pelvis and the severed upper end of a thigh bone. |
