100bc-AD43 | A cist grave dug into the shale bedrock, c0.9m x 0.6m x 0.5m deep, over which two dunstone slabs had been balanced at right angles to form a gable across which two other similar slabs were placed at each end. These stones were not native to the region, but showed signs of weathering. The stones covered a large upright urn of thin black ware, of Beaker like shape with an unusually broad mouth, which had contained ashes of a cremation judging from staining of the inside bottom, although no human ashes were reported. The report dated it late in the period, and even possibly post-Roman invasion. |
