2500bc-14/1300bc | The northern of two round barrows jointly so named comprised an earth mound with a course of small uneven stones heaped one on the other round the margin. At the centre were 5 stones lying flat on the ground, one of these covering a mass of comminuted bones mixed with earth. Associated with this cremation was a bronze dagger blade, and an oval amber object which might have been its pommel. This latter had its surface inlaid with gold pins forming a cross, each arm consisting of three parallel rows of pins. The gold pin decoration continues on the back surface. An ancient break had been repaired, also with gold pinning to form part of the design. At the centre of the barrow was a small stone cairn containing nothing but a small fragment of charcoal. |
