8/700bc-100bc | A hill fort with occupation evidence for Iron Age A. On site C there was a circular storage pit 3m in diameter x 2.9m deep, with vertical sides and cut into the underlying rock. It was filled with stones, a few sherds of Iron Age A type (as site A), charcoal, animal bone (mostly sheep), and a quartz pebble probably from the Severn estuary gravel. It had been deliberately filled in, probably at one time, and not left to silt up. A human cranial fragment was found high in the filling, and three joining cranial fragments were also found in the trial trench which uncovered the pit. They probably represent two individuals, one of whom had suffered a sword blow to the head. |
