2500bc-14/1300bc | Cist 2.3m x 1.2m x 0.9m high covered by a single huge slab of stone, near to the stone circles called The Hurlers. It contained a skeleton accompanied by a diminutive gold beaker with ribbon like handle, a long ogival bronze dagger, pottery, 'some pieces of ivory', 'a few glass beads' (probably faience), and other objects. The cist was built into the outer edge of the round barrow mound, above ground level, hence a secondary burial. It was believed Early Bronze Age (Hencken 1932), and c BC 1700-1400 in his chronology. The gold beaker has been placed at the later end of the Early Bronze Age as Wessex II (Burgess 1980). |
