2500bc-14/1300bc | A bowl barrow with loose earth and stone outer ring, a mound made of alternate layers of black peaty soil and grey, yellow and red clayey sandy and gravelly material (red and black dominating). The barrow floor was a naturally continuous surface of iron cemented sand and stones. A small cavity was dug in the centre of the barrow, lined by a layer of unbaked grey clay continued above the original ground surface to form an irregular ovoid chamber 0.33m x 0.3m x 0.2m in height, with smooth internal walls. There was a small hole in the top, left to insert ashes, then it was sealed. It contained a mixture of fine charcoal and calcined human bones of an adult, one or two unburnt (?)human bones, a few pieces of white cherty material, and a cylinder of charcoal, possibly a calcined bead. There were a few pieces of charcoal and calcined bone fragments on the barrow floor. |
