2500bc-14/1300bc | Round barrow with oolitic dry stone wall kerb. In the centre of the barrow was a layer of charcoal and burnt earth 10cm above the subsoil c1.2m in diameter. At the south edge of the burnt layer was a mass of calcined fragments of bone of a male c35-40, almost free of charcoal grains. On the mass was a small perforated amber bead. In the hollow of the bone mass was a bronze awl, and two small pulley-buttons, one burnt. An oval amber bead and a spherical burnt shale bead was also found amongst the bones. The bones had possibly been collected in a bag after the pyre had cooled. The junctions of the kerbs of Barrows III and IV (Site 344) showed that III was marginally earlier. |
