2500bc-14/1300bc | A large disc barrow whose first structure was a small stake circle, later burnt, and a charcoal scatter on the old land surface, running mainly to the north east under several subsequent structures. A stake circle c32m in diameter first had a turf bank placed at its outer base, behind which was built a flint wall. Up to and over the flint was piled a chalk bank, the inner edge of which was traced to the stake circle on the north/north west. There were some stake holes in the chalk bank, and larger posts intermittently under the bank. At the ESE an entrance led into the circle marked by a 2.1m wide stake hole passage. A central grave contained the cremation of an adult c25 in a pit, 3 amber beads, 30 flat shale beads, a bronze knife, and a bronze awl. The upper part of the grave was filled with ash and a few bits of bone. Upcast covered the cremation and an incomplete double stake hole ring was set in and behind it. The next stage was to fill the centre circle with turf. A secondary grave under a small mound was placed on the berm to the east of the circle: it was a circular hole lined with basketwork (there were slender stake holes), containing the cremation of a young adult and a bronze awl. |
