2500bc-14/1300bc | A bowl barrow with a chalk capped mound. It covered three contemporary cremation interments, each possibly in a post hole redug to serve as a cremation pit. Each pit had an ogee profile. Pit 1 was approximately central and contained a cremation covered by an inverted collared urn. Ashes and charcoal were poured in and the pit was sealed with a fine layer of soil. Pit 2 was north east of the centre and was twice the diameter of and deeper than Pit 1. It contained an amber button on its floor, possibly securing a bag in which the cremation had been placed mixed with pyre soil. This was covered by a layer of chalk, then a layer of ash and cremated bone, on top of which was turf. Pit 3 was west of the centre and filled with a cremation possibly deposited in a bag, over which was poured a mixture of ash containing scraps of cremated bone and soil. |
