3500bc - 2500bc | Long barrow oriented ESE, built on occupation scatter of plain bowl sherds, flintwork and charcoal. No trace of human skeletal material, or of a mortuary structure, or of any paved burial area. Animal bone in and under the mound, and 3 ox skulls, two with vertebrae attached. Hurdling on the axial line, and bays divided by hurdles. These were filled in with dumps of turf, earth and chalk gravel with some small sarsens and layers of poles. Banked chalk gravel completed the mound. RC: charcoal from occupation scatter NPL-138 3250 +/- 160, antler pick from mound BM-506b 2350 +/-90, BM-506a 2515 +/- 90 Compare Bishops Cannings 76 (Site 74) and South Street (Site 97). |
