2500bc-14/1300bc A cremation was contained in a sub-rectangular grave 1.3m x 0.9m dug into the chalk subsoil. Mixed with the unevenly cremated bone and charcoal were 107 discoidal shale beads and 16 graduated amber beads. A conical gold covered shale button (the shale lathe turned) was lying point downwards on top of the cremation debris in the centre of the pit. At the same level against the pit side were the fragments of a complete incense cup. The bones were of two persons, probably a male and a female. 12m south west was a second unaccompanied cremation in a similar chalk cut pit, possibly of a male: surface erosion of the bone suggests a different burial environment from those in the first pit. A similar pit containing fire-cracked flints was mid-way between these. A further probable burial contained a food vessel but had been cut into by an Anglo-Saxon burial.
