3500bc - 2500bc | A long barrow oriented E, with a dummy portal and 4 chambered cists on the south side. A possible primary crouched skeleton of a young man was found on ground level [1821 excavations]. Paving stones were at the east end, and a possible corbelled roof. In chamber A were 7 skeletons (5 female and children c1, 2, 5, 15 and 50), chamber B was empty, chamber C contained 9 adult males c20, 25, 30, 45, 50 and 55 plus two other aged persons, and chamber D contained 10 skeletons (including 4 male and female adults and 4 children c3, 4, 7 and 17) [1854 excavations]. Most appeared dolichocephalic. The chambers were on the south side of the barrow running EW. There were no grave goods in the cists. One skull appeared deliberately cleft. |
