14/1300bc-8/700bc | Deposits of at least 15 urns, some incomplete but all containing cremated material, and of two cremations without urns, were found all in a very limited space. The urns were of the bucket and barrel type and where possible to record their position were inverted. Over a number there appeared to have been a layer of black carbonaceous matter containing flints and stones reddened by fire. Urns 14 and 15 rested on a platform of stones, flint pebbles being especially numerous. Under one of these was found a quartzite pebble used as a grinding muller for grain. The 2 unurned cremations stood on and were protected by stones. There were at certain points traces of fire in cracked, calcined and reddened stones, and in the E/SE area in particular was a large layer c6m in diameter of fine carbonaceous matter 15cm thick to the south east of the urn group and about 1.2m distant. This may have been the crematorium. |
