The area of the front of the bank, revealed in plan below the state shown in 1/1. The dark turf revetment of the clay bank (to the left), gives way in the centre to the clay packing behind the wall (period 2), cut by the palisade trench (period 4) excavated to the right. A later pit, at the base of which the stones of the destroyed wall are showing, appears top right. See also photos 1/8 of the same state, and 1/9, a view from the opposite direction.
