Aspect: View looking W
Small sondage on the area of the front of the bank (to the right) - same state as 1/15, looking W. Shows the remains of the dark turf revetment (to the left of the ranging pole), giving way to the clay packing behind the wall, here excavated out. This reveals several stones of the former wall, still in situ. This is cut by the palisade trench of period 4, seen in section top left, underneath which are the destruction deposits of the wall. See photos of the same at a later stage of excavation in 1/18, and at an earlier stage of excavation in 1/13.
