The Incidence of 'Early' Gaulish Samian, mainly from the Lyons region, in Britain

Lyon is believed to be a main centre for the production of early provincial sigillata. A kiln site has been excavated at La Muette (Lasfargues et al. 1976).

This catalogue lists the occurrence of some items from this source recorded by the author in the course of the study. Whilst the distribution of this ware in Britain was not researched exhaustively it is thought that this list may be a useful resource.

Site type: Major civil centre.

A range of early Gaulish sigillata was recovered which is thought to originate mainly from the Lyons area (Bird 2000b). Bird states: "The early Gaulish products consist of thirty-nine sherds on a simple count" (2000b, 184).

Site type: Iron Age enclosure with conquest period 'occupation' and subsequent Roman period activity, with a potential villa.

A Loeschcke 8 cup in "provincial Arretine fabric" was represented amongst sigillata recovered during the excavations of 1947-57; this is thought to be an early example of the form, "c. AD 1-25" (Dickinson and Hartley 1988, 30); a further fragment of "provincial Arretine" was also recovered during the excavations of 1947-57 (Dickinson and Hartley 1988, 32). The excavations yielded a significant assemblage of "Proto-South Gaulish" and "early South Gaulish" samian, which is listed illustrated and discussed by Dannell (1971, 260-6) where full details are presented. The following forms are reported:

Fishbourne 1983

A Ritterling 5, in South Gaulish fabric and of Tiberio-Claudian date was recovered from site context 23a in the area of the north wing of the proto-palace (page 257, Fig, 21 No. 2). [Identification GBD].

Fishbourne 1995-9 & 2002

The recent excavations at Fishbourne, to the east of the palace, have produced a collection of pre-Claudian sigillata ware items, a number of which are examples of early provincial output.
