Questionnaire

  1. There are many reasons why Reformers might have been interested in forcing reform, including economic and political as well as religious factors. However, the issue here is how ordinary people experienced the Reformation. What is your understanding of the perspectives of the characters in the short story? What did you notice the second time that you did not notice the first time? How did the story make you feel each time?
  2. Consider Mellor and Shilling's interpretation of the Reformation as a dramatic shift towards a religion of 'seeing and hearing'; one of individual minds and cognitive understanding, as opposed to embodied knowledge and communal experience (1997). To what extent do you agree that the Reformation was accomplished intellectually? Why?
  3. What is your overall interpretation of the material provided? What questions has it raised?
  4. Discuss briefly how you used the materials provided? How did the format impact upon your engagement with the content of the article?
