arcosolium
An arched niche containing a burial.
bipedales
Large, square bricks measuring two Roman feet on a side.
cappellaccio
A volcanic tufo found in several of Rome's hills and typically used as a construction material in the 6th and 5th centuries BCE.
cippus
An upright stone marker, often inscribed.
eye cups
Greek Attic pottery drinking vessels decorated with painted eyes on the body, widespread in the late 6th century.
oratorio
Small, chapel-like Christian cult place.
palmettes
Decorative motifs in the shape of palm leaves.
peperino
A hard volcanic tufo quarried in the hinterland of Rome.
peripteral
Having columns all around its perimeter.
pozzolana
A volcanic sand that was often used in Roman concrete.
sima
Roof molding of terracotta or stone that characterized Roman temples.
sovradipinta
A type of overpainted fineware

tufo
A generic descriptor for a variety of volcanic rocks found in central Italy.
