A total of 1199 objects from sites all over Britain are recorded on the database. This number includes 1000 Romano-British figurines and four pedestal bases; the remainder are not Romano-British in date, but are modern imports or objects other than figurines. Of these, 465 are male deities, 125 female deities, 42 humans, 296 birds, animals or other creatures and 72 unidentified figurines or fragments. An additional 195 pieces, the majority of which have been published as Romano-British figurines, are recorded on the database. These are, however, fittings, modern pieces or ancient figures that were imported after the Roman period, and some of the problems associated with identifying and dating figurines are discussed in Section 2.3.1. It should also be noted that in this study a statue is a figure of roughly life-size or greater, while a figurine is shorter than 200mm, and statuettes fall between the two, although usually they are somewhat smaller than two-thirds life-size.
