Description | This figurine takes the form of a classical nude male. The figure is standing and has been truncated just above the ankle to each leg. The left leg is placed slightly forward to the right. Both arms are truncated at the elbow, but it does appear that the right arm would have bent upwards and the left downwards. The head of the figure is worn and abraded. No facial features survive. There is no evidence for hair. A slight knop to the left side may be an ear, though it seems to be placed fairly high. It may possibly be the beginnings of a wing, offering the possibility that the figure may be Mercury. The torso has a grooved T shape line to distinguish the chest and abdominal muscles. The genitals are truncated. To the reverse of the figure a grooved line runs down the back in a continuous line through the buttocks. The surface of the figurine is abraded and pitted but it survives with an even dark green patina. Exposed surfaces are fractionally lighter. There are only small patches of brighter green corrosion product to the head (PAS). The lack of drapery and the stance might also suggest Apollo. |
