Note

Note 1 [go back]. It is possible that hides may have been hung inside Thule winter houses as a means of coping with the incessant dripping of oil from roof rafters made using fresh whalebone. If true, then this would likely have negated the effects of light and shadow on the appearance of the roof frame assembly. While we acknowledge that this is a possibility, there is no archaeological evidence to suggest that it was practiced.
