4.4.3 Identifying building forms: recognisable cohesions

There are problems with differentiating building function on the basis of broad plan-form, as observed through the aerial photographs. This is perhaps exacerbated by a modular and cellular form that is shared across a variety of structures, from houses to mosques. However, the scale, locational attributes, and details of design, may make it possible to divide the visible data into broad generic groups: domestic housing, hammans, suqs, caravanserais, madrasas, mosques, minarets and open spaces.

The potentially distinctive features of each are discussed in the following sections.
