9. The suburban landscape: the smell of markets, traders, pasture, industry – mixed with the gardens of paradise

The current landscape (Fig. 33) in this area is relatively flat, with some modern agriculture in the vicinity (Fig. 40). The most striking features are a few upstanding historic buildings. However, the archaeological resource is not confined to the standing monuments; there is a complex landscape of extra-mural activity visible on the aerial photographs, suggesting more buildings, and also gardens, orchards and industrial activities.
