2.5.2 Case studies

Within the period-specific overview, it was noted that in several areas there was a visible discrepancy between the distributions of findspots for different periods. These, with the exception of the Roman and Early Medieval period in the West Midlands and Lincolnshire, will be explored in more detail here as examples of how analyses of portable antiquities can inform discussion of historic landscapes, and how their recovery and the constraints discussed previously do not necessarily obscure ancient settlement patterns. In addition, the Solent region provides an interesting case study. Here, the high density of finds may partly be a function of the evolution of the PAS but such an explanation may itself hide historical reasons for the pattern.
