Description | Incomplete copper alloy Roman figurine of Mars, missing two arms, one leg and one lower leg. The object has lost all its original patina. The figurine is standing in a naturalistic, classical pose - one hip slightly higher than the other, leaning on one leg, the stomach slumping slightly forwards. The figure is naked and light grooves define the chest muscles and the genitals, and on the opposite side, the buttocks. One shoulder suggests the arm lay at the side of the body, while the other suggests its arm stuck out at least part-way to the side. The facial expression is largely obscured with corrosion, but suggest two hollows for eyes, a straight groove for a mouth and pinched nose. The hair is close-cropped but shoulder length, and the helmet appears to sit on the back of the head. It has a tall, elaborate crest with a wide and deep groove down the centre to accentuate each side (PAS). |
