Introduction

Highly Commended stamp

With the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the e-journal Internet Archaeology is building on the success of the original LEAP project and is pleased to announce the Making the LEAP II: A Transatlantic LEAP project.

The aim of the project is to publish four exemplars (based upon projects hosted in North American institutions) of multi-layered e-publications in Internet Archaeology, and to make the underlying data available via a digital archive in such a way so that readers are provided with the opportunity to 'drill down' seamlessly from the publication into the archive to test interpretations and develop their own conclusions.

The project will use the existing infrastructure of the e-journal Internet Archaeology to provide four sustainable exemplars of multi-layered e-publications and e-archives of broad interest to an international audience. An online mechanism, linked to the journal, that facilitates and encourages comment and debate will also be developed. The archive component of each exemplar will be hosted by an appropriate US-based digital repository, or by the Archaeology Data Service.

Proposals had to be submitted by 26th January 2009. The strength of the response resulted in much deliberation but the following four projects have been selected as they gave the widest geographic coverage and best fulfilled the project's objectives.

Exemplar 1: The Shala Valley Project, Northern Albania - Michael L. Galaty (Millsaps College, Jackson, MS), Wayne E. Lee (University of North Carolina) and Charles Watkinson (American School of Classical Studies at Athens, Princeton)

Exemplar 2: Placing immateriality: situating the material of highland Chiriquí, Panamá - Karen Holmberg (Columbia University)

Exemplar 3: The BTC Pipeline Archaeological Excavations in Azerbaijan - Paul Taylor (Smithsonian Museum) and David Maynard (Landsker Archaeology)

Exemplar 4: Strategies for developing a next-generation virtual museum using close range scanning - Fred Limp (University of Arkansas)

Further details on each project will be uploaded in due course.
