Considering the size and importance of Hacienda Zuleta's ramp-mound site, little archaeological research has ever been conducted here. A group of German investigators is reported to have undertaken excavations at the largest 'pyramid' in the Quebrada San Pedro during the 1930s, but the material retrieved was taken back to Germany, and then lost during the Second World War. During the 1970s and 1980s, two North American researchers - J. Stephen Athens and then Gregory Knapp - visited the site, conducting the first formal studies into the functioning of the Late Period societies and indigenous agricultural systems, but no actual excavations were carried out there.
