View of Area 2, at an early stage in the excavations. The top of the noticeable break of slope, top left, marks the line of the southern bank. The figures are on the western (N-S) clay bank, clearing a stack of turf within the body of the bank. The intra-mural walkway is just starting to be uncovered, to the left. The palisade trench of period 4 runs along the front of the bank, just to the right of the figures in the middle, and shows in section in the machine-cut trench in the foreground. (For progressively later states of the excavation, see photos 2/23 , 2/21, 2/22.)
