Period 1 - The inner ditch has been cleaned out and probably deepened on more than one occasion, and its sides considerably eroded.
Period 2 - The ditch has probably been cleaned out in periods 2A and 2C. The bottom part of the fill accumulated in period 2B [44] has survived the recut of period 2C.
Period 3 - The ditch has been partly filled with stones from the destruction of the wall - some of them large - in period 3A [57]. It has subsequently filled up naturally with earthy clay [54, 23] over a period of some time without further disturbance.
Period 4 - There are no features of this period in this section.
